of Lane Bryant
Lane Bryant is a retail chain of women’s linen and clothing
store. They cater mainly to the ‘plus-sized’ woman.
The store began in the early as a store that catered and specialized
in maternity clothes that were design and created by Lena Himmelstein
Bryant Malsin.
Lena began her business because she was widowed at an early age
and found herself having to make a living for herself and her
young son. She borrowed $ 300 from her brother-in-law as a working
capital and went to a bank to open her first account. The bank
personnel misspelled her name in the application as “Lane’
instead of ‘Lena’. Later she moved into a small rented
house on Fifth Avenue and paid $ 12.50 a month, She used the front
of the house as a store front. There she hung her linens from
the gas fixtures and opened the doors.
One day, one of her customers came to her store and informed Lena
that she was pregnant and wanted to get something specially designed
for her, something that she could wear in public and be comfortable
in. Lena designed a pleated skirt equipped with an elasticized
waistband. This was the first known commercially made maternity
dress.. This dress became a big hit with the middle class women,
and the not-so-well-to-do class who had to go for work despite
their condition. This dress very soon became Lena’s best-seller.
She was married to Albert Malsin in the year 1909. He helped her
expand the business systematically. Annual sales reached $ 50,000
by the end of 1910. He made several successful innovative changes
to enlarge the company’s revenue.
Lane Bryant and Malsin made the first mail order catalogue for
garments worn by pregnant women. These pregnant women loved the
ability of shopping from the warmth of their home. By the end
of 1917, sales from the catalogue only exceeded $ 1 million annually.
By 1919 their "stout catalog" had 52 pages and the "maternity
catalog" 76 pages.
In the year 1915, the first area office retail store was inaugurated
in Chicago. After Lane Bryant’s death in 1951, her sons
took charge of the business. The Lane Bryant operations were bought
in 1969 by The Limited. By that time, the retail chain had full-fledged
stores to more than 100 in number with sales of $200 million per
annum.
